Shelter for Haiti

It's 4:30 AM, pouring with rain and the dog (Polly) refuses to leave the shelter of the big conifer to come inside. I'm about to lose my patience when Laura reminds me that millions in Haiti are still homeless. I feel ashamed.
Go visit Laura who is actually doing something to help in the way of another fabulous bag-of-goodies auction while I try and entice the dog indoors with a snack...

Futuro House Auctioned

A mid-century icon, one of the original podlike Futuro houses by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen was sold June 2 by Wright as part of their Important Design auction. The prefabricated house had an estimate of $50,000-$70,000, far less than the 140,000 euros another Futuro house fetched at Christie's in Paris less than two years ago.

A sort of futuristic cabin, Futuro houses were light (made of polyester plastic and fiberglass), easily transportable anywhere by helicopter and first used as ski lodges or summer homes. From 1968 fewer than 100 Futuro Houses were built, but they ended up in places as far flung as Belgium, New Zealand and Mill Creek Park Willingboro, NJ. They were sold in the United States for between $12,000 and $14,000 but by 1978 tastes had changed and oil prices had made them uneconomical to produce. Originally designed to sleep 6-8, equipped with a kitchen and, as an upgrade, a fab fireplace, Futuro houses have since found other uses - as media rooms, gas stations, even the "special room" at a strip joint - but you can still stay in a Futuro vacation house in the woods near Milwaukee, Wisconsin to get the full alien spaceship experience.

Remarkable

How fortuitous is it that Richard Fuld, ex-Lehman Bros CEO and chairman and his wife Kathy put their art collection in the hands of Christie's with a guaranteed price of $20 million back in September? The Guardian called this deal "remarkable" because the guarantee ensures that even if the art market has tanked and the auction fails to deliver that much the Fulds will get their $20 million anyway.
The auction, which includes three Willem de Koonings and an Ashille Gorky appropriately entitled Agony, is going ahead as I type.

Crisis? What crisis?

The stock market is tumbling to the depths but the art market is looking pretty perky, especially if your name is Damian Hirst and you sold a huge collection of recent works through Sotheby's yesterday and today. “Beautiful Inside My Head Forever” featured 223 works including Golden Calf (above), which fetched a record breaking 10.35 million pounds. Hirst's six studios have been working flat out to produce the art for the auction and other works for sale include The Kingdom, a tiger shark suspended in formaldehyde and Aurothioglucose, a dot painting. Although some people thought Hirst was taking a risk by-passing galleries and selling directly through an auction house, it seems to have paid off. I wonder what he is going to do with all that money?
And just to make me feel old, the auction was held on the 20th anniversary of the Freeze exhibition that launched Damian Hirst on the art world.

If I had $1,000,000

Or two, I'd buy a mid-century modern house in California and furnish it with this table from Carl Chaffee. Doesn't it make you want to sit outdoors in the sunshine sipping orange juice?
